Contributions to the third annual Christ’s Hands project, sponsored by the Pittsburgh Catholic in cooperation with the Red Door ministry of St. Mary of Mercy Parish in Downtown Pittsburgh, have passed the $5,000 mark.

“We can’t thank people enough for their clothing and monetary donations for the Christ’s Hands Project,” said Carmella Weismantle, operations manager and advertising director for the Pittsburgh Catholic. “Their generosity is overwhelming.”

She recently presented a check of some $4,800 to Heidi Potter, co-director of the Red Door program. The proceeds represented the initial contributions to the drive.

Weismantle said that Potter was “elated” by the generosity of readers and contributors, who have also donated warm coats, hats, gloves, scarves and afghans. It’s “helping to make this beautiful mission of Christ’s Hands come to fruition,” Potter said.

The items will be distributed at the Red Door’s Christmas Dinner Dec. 21 at Lawless Hall of St. Mary of Mercy.

Popular items include any kind of Steelers gear. Donations for men, winter gear such as hand and foot warmers, and handmade items for children that can be given as special gifts are also needed. Pet food is welcome because people have been known to give up their food for pets, who they see as their only companion in life. Pet coats and blankets are also accepted.

Donations can be dropped off at the Red Door, on the Boulevard of the Allies side of St. Mary of Mercy, 202 Stanwix St., from 9 a.m.-noon Monday through Saturday. Special arrangements for dropping off donations can be made by calling 412-261-0112. Checks should be made payable to the Pittsburgh Catholic and designated for “Christ’s Hands Project” in the memo line. They can be mailed to Christ’s Hands Project, 111 Boulevard of the Allies, Suite 200, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15222.
